Frequently Asked Questions About General Dentistry in Oakdale, CA
Does dental insurance cover general dentistry services?
Most dental insurance plans pay for general dentistry services such as exams, cleanings, and X-rays, usually covering 80 to 100 percent with no deductible because these are preventive care. Coverage for fillings, extractions, or other treatments depends on your plan and insurer.
Preventive visits are usually the most fully covered part of most plans. Restorative work, such as fillings or crowns, often has a different level of coverage and may require coinsurance. Waiting periods and yearly maximums can also affect what your plan pays. Always check your specific coverage with your insurer or dental office.
How long does a dental checkup take?
A routine dental checkup usually takes 30 to 60 minutes and includes a cleaning, exam, and sometimes X-rays. Your visit may take longer if the dentist finds something that needs more attention or if it is your first time at a new office.
The cleaning usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, while the dentist’s exam and any X-rays fill the rest of the time. New patients often need more time for a full health history and the first set of X-rays.
How can I maintain good oral health at home?
Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss once daily, and limit sugary snacks and drinks to keep your mouth healthy at home. Regular dental checkups, usually every six months, help your dentist monitor your oral health.
- Brush for two minutes with a soft-bristled toothbrush, and replace it every three months.
- Floss or use an interdental cleaner every day to remove plaque between your teeth where a toothbrush cannot reach.
- Rinse your mouth with water after eating sugary or acidic foods to help protect your enamel between brushings.
What should I look for when choosing a general dentist in Oakdale, CA?
Choose a licensed general dentist who has good patient reviews, convenient office hours, accepts your insurance, and makes you feel comfortable. Blackhart Dentistry, for example, focuses on family-friendly, comprehensive care for patients of all ages in the Oakdale area.
- Make sure the dentist is licensed in California. You can check this with the Dental Board of California.
- Check if the office provides the services you need, such as cleanings, fillings, or emergency care.
- Read patient reviews and think about scheduling a first visit to see if you feel comfortable and like the way the dentist communicates before making a long-term choice.
What's the difference between a family dentist and a general dentist?
A general dentist and a family dentist both provide the same core services — exams, cleanings, fillings, and preventive care — but a family dentist specifically treats patients of all ages, from young children to seniors, in one practice. “General dentist” is a broader professional term describing the type of training, while “family dentist” describes the patient population a practice is set up to serve.
Both types complete the same dental school training and licensing requirements, so their clinical skill levels are equivalent. The practical difference shows up in how the office is structured — a family dentist’s schedule and environment are typically built to accommodate pediatric patients alongside adults. At Blackhart Dentistry, we serve the whole family under one roof.
Should my child see a family dentist or a pediatric dentist?
Both can be good choices. A family dentist can treat children and adults in the same office, while a pediatric dentist has two to three extra years of training focused on children’s dental development. Children with special needs or complex dental problems may benefit most from a pediatric specialist.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child see a dentist by their first birthday or within six months after their first tooth appears. A family dentist is convenient if you want everyone in your household to go to the same office, but you should ask if they are comfortable treating young children or if they suggest seeing a specialist.

What Our Patients Say
On time, efficient, professional and friendly.
So I was telling him about the two incredible experiences at had at this dental office in Oakdale, California...
Guess what, it is sooo worth driving the 80+ miles to get this quality of dental care that tomorrow morning we're gonna do it; journey out to Oakdale from Hayward, because these people here are that good.
Contrast & compare the stark difference experienced in the Bay Area; the continual flack, lack of bedside manners, and generally giving off the air that they do not like their jobs, it's a wonder that NCal Ortho has a customer base at all.
I highly recommend Blackheart, Albertoni & Corso dentistry. Quality care at very reasonable prices.

Well i went all in on Invisalign. This is my 3rd week wearing them. I always thought Invisalign was just two pieces of plastic that you wore over your teeth for some time.
Now I wonder, "but how would that work?:
Well, it wouldn't.
Come to find, Invisalign is several months or more of plastic moldings that you change every 4 days or so. The first plastic molding is almost identical to what your teeth look like in your mouth at the beginning. The last plastic molding is what your teeth will look like at the end of the treatment.
Currently on set 5 of 33. If all goes according to plan, I should have a nice set of near perfect white teeth by the end of November/ early December.
If you're trying to decide between regular metal braces, or Invisalign, you might wanna consider this:
Pros
Invisalign is
- less expensive
- less invasive (you can take them out, if you so desire)
- they are hardly noticeable (this may be important to your kid(s)
- it seems like it is faster than standard metal braces
- you don't have to keep frequenting your dentist to have your braces tightened.
Cons
If you're middle aged, nothing takes 10 years off your age like a set of goofy metal braces. Add to that an adolescent demeanor, and you just might start getting carded again.
Whatever you choose, just know that the teams at this dentist office are the professional artisans of their craft. I used to really dread going to the dentist.
I dread no more.
I no longer get anxious at the thought of going to the dentist, (this dentist anyway. I suppose if I didn't have these peeps as my dentist, I might get that phobia back).
The people here care about your comfort. They care about your state of mind. They understand that it's difficult for some people to go to the dentat. They've got great bedside manners. They'll put your fears at ease.
Which brings me to my last observation;
I'm not so sure they are taking on new customers at this time. I see the hundreds & hundreds of patient files on the shelves. You will have to call and ask if they have any openings for new customers.
